Time of Music started yesterday in Viitasaari. An international seminar focusing on the Promotion of the Finnish Contemporary Music was held in Wiikki Manor house in the afternoon, in co-operation with Sibelius Academy's Continuing Education and Finnish Music Information Centre (Fimic). The speakers of the seminar were – among others – Henk Heuvelmans (director, Gaudeamus Music Week), Keizo Maeda (Conversation & Company) and Johan Tallgren (Musica Nova, Helsinki). Following the tradition, the opening concert was held in the church of Viitasaari. A cross-section of festivals program and themes was performed by Eva Alkula, Tomoya Nakai, Michael Finnissy, Uusinta and Juho Laitinen to name a few. At the club concert of Pihkuri some bordurian folklore was introduced to the audience.
Michael Finnissy’s world premier of the piece “Viitasaari” will be heard later during the festival week performed by Eija Kankaanranta, Uusinta and the composer himself. Other performers appearing on the festival are Ian Pace, SMASH, ConTempo as well as many other Finnish forefront musicians.
